New Year's resolution: Wear white at the Rose Bowl

December 15, 2008

Penn Staters will take their famed Beaver Stadium White Out to the west coast for the New Year's Day clash with Southern California in the Rose Bowl.

The Penn State student body is calling on all Nittany Lion fans to wear white and unite as one to the support the team.

The Penn State football team also will wear white as the visiting team in the 95th Rose Bowl Game, which will kick at 2:10 p.m. PT in Pasadena, Calif. Traditional powers Penn State (11-1) and USC (11-1) will be meeting for the ninth time, with each side winning four times. The squads have met twice previously in bowl games, with the Trojans winning the 1923 Rose Bowl and the Nittany Lions capturing the 1982 Fiesta Bowl.

Over the past five seasons, Nittany Lion fans have made Beaver Stadium one of the nation's toughest venues for opponents, with Penn State earning a 26-2 home record dating to its 2004 win over Michigan State. Earlier this season, ESPN The Magazine rated the loud and proud Penn State student section, which numbers 21,000-plus, the nation's Best Overall student section. The Nittany Lions' enthusiastic and passionate fanatics also earned the No. 1 ranking for Most Fun, No. 2 for Most Creative and No. 4 for Loudest student sections in the nation.

In 2005, ESPN College Gameday also declared the Penn State student section the nation's best.

During the 2004 season, Penn State students began wearing white, leading to all-stadium Penn State White Outs for the Nittany Lions' clashes with Notre Dame (2007) and Illinois (2008) the past two seasons, and launching copycat sections of solid blocks of team colors at schools across the nation.

Coach Joe Paterno's Big Ten Champion Nittany Lions (11-1) are preparing for their New Year's Day clash with No. 5/4 USC (11-1), the Pac-10 champions, in the 95th Rose Bowl presented by Citi in Pasadena, Calif. The ninth meeting between the traditional powers will air on ABC, ESPN Radio and the Penn State Sports Network.

No. 6 Penn State will be playing in its 35th bowl game under Paterno (23rd New Year's bowl), who is the all-time leader in bowl appearances and wins (23-10-1 record).
