Professor among first chosen for genocide intervention fellowship

January 20, 2009

Lee Ann De Reus, associate professor of human development and family studies and women's studies at Penn State Altoona, has been selected for the 2009 Carl Wilkens Fellowship program. De Reus is one of 20 fellows chosen from across the United States to participate in this inaugural program conducted by the Genocide Intervention Network in Washington, D.C.

The Carl Wilkens Fellowship Program trains emerging leaders to be authorities on anti-genocide legislation and current crises and to be skilled campaign strategists at the state and national levels. Fellows will serve as anti-genocide experts to elected officials, work as campaign strategists, and serve as guest speakers and ambassadors to events. The fellowship is named in honor of Carl Wilkens, the only American to remain in Rwanda during the 1994 genocide.
