IST celebrates 'Women in IT History' month

March 02, 2009

University Park, Pa. -- In observance of March as Women’s History Month, the College of IST will feature activities aimed at creating greater awareness about the role of women in the history of information technology, and addressing the gender imbalance in the field.

The college will host a panel discussion titled "Women in IT Leadership" on Thursday, March 19 from 9:45-11 a.m. in the IST Building Cybertorium. The panel will feature Sondra Barbour and Cathy Pomanti, two senior IT professionals.

Barbour is CIO and Vice President of Enterprise Business Services at Lockheed Martin Corporation; she has more than 20 years of management and technology experience. Pomanti is the former Executive Vice President of BearingPoint, Inc, and recently retired after more than 30 years in the IT field. She is currently the only woman on the IST Advisory Board.

"The panelists will discuss their experiences as women in senior IT leadership positions, talking about the challenges they have encountered, as well as individual and institutional responses to address the gender imbalance in the field," said Eileen Trauth, the college’s associate dean for diversity, outreach, and international engagement.

The event will be available online for those unable to attend in person.

IST faculty members are encouraged to ask their students to attend this panel and to have follow-up discussions in their classes about gender in the IT field.

In addition to the panel discussion, the digital billboards in the IST Building all month will feature women who have played an important role in IT history.
