Chicago, Ill. -- At its annual conference in Chicago this week, Institute for the International Education of Students (IES) Abroad presented its Lifetime Achievement Award to Barbara Rowe, executive director of Education Abroad in Penn State's Office of Global Programs.

IES Abroad, one of the largest third-party providers of study abroad experiences in the U.S., gives this prestigious award to a person who has served the study abroad field through significant professional and volunteer work, including conference presentations, regional and national offices, and professional awards.

A national leader in the field of education abroad, Rowe joined Penn State in August after serving as assistant dean of International Programs and Fellowships at Yale College for and director of the Office of International Education at Bucknell University.

Rowe’s work with IES Abroad includes serving as chair of the general conference, a position that represents the members of the IES Abroad consortium, including acting as the liaison with the board of directors. Her time as chair came during a critical time of growth for the organization as it developed its IES MAP program which established industry standards for study abroad programs.

Nominated by Susan Carty and Kathleen Sideli of Indiana University, Rowe is vice chair of the Forum on Education Abroad board of directors. Currently, she directs Penn State's study abroad office, one of the largest in the country. Prior to her arrival at Penn State, Rowe directed the study abroad office at Yale, where she served as a leader in the development of the Peking University-Yale University Joint Undergraduate Program. At Yale she also was a member of the Dean’s Faculty Advisory Committee for Initiatives in China, the advisory committee for the Office of International Affairs, numerous fellowship selection committees, the Provost’s University Advisory Committee on International Education and the University Task Force on Student International Travel.
