October 28, 2009

Alaa S. Awad, assistant professor of medicine and cellular and molecular physiology, was the recipient of a First Place Junior Faculty Award at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine's Cardiovascular Young Investigators' Forum, held in Chicago, Ill. in September. This is an annual competition in which 20 junior faculty are selected from among applicants throughout the United States to present their research. His talk was titled, “Blockade of Kidney Macrophage Infiltration Ameliorates Diabetic Nephropathy."

Awad's research provided seminal findings for the direct role of CCR2 chemokine receptor for the treatment of diabetic nephropathy.

These findings may help in developing new therapeutic strategies to prevent or slow down the progression of renal damage associated with diabetes. This work was supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health, K99/R00 Award.
