The Harold and Inge Marcus Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering has received a software gift from Simio, a developer of 3D object-oriented simulation software.

The software from the Pittsburgh, Pa., firm allows users to do discrete and continuous modeling, object library development and 3D animation.

The Simio software is used in two graduate-level courses in the department. Students use the software for research in manufacturing, supply chain modeling and health care.

"Our graduate students appreciate Simio's object-oriented approach and easy extensibility," said Deborah Medeiros, associate professor of industrial engineering. "I also will use Simio to introduce freshman engineers to simulation. The standard object library is easy to use and the animation is engaging. From a research perspective, Simio offers new opportunities for optimizing patient flow in health care systems using intelligent objects."
