Dispatch from New Zealand: Bon Voyage! ... and We're Here!

June 15, 2010

Editor's note: The Penn State Glee Club recently embarked upon a trip "Down Under" to perform at various venues in New Zealand. Follow their travels through Dispatches they filed along the way.

Dispatch 1: Bon Voyage!

Greetings from Pittsburgh International Airport! Tour is officially under way. Despite having taken no flights yet, some members already seem jet-lagged.

We got to the Pittsburgh area last night for a final domestic performance before departing the US. The venue was the Aspinwall Presbyterian Church, a very wonderful hall. Joining us there were the Fox Chapel High School Madrigal Singers. Former Assistant Conductor of the Penn State Glee Club, Nathan Glocke was student teaching at Fox Chapel, and for one final time directed the Glee Club.

Also returning for Glee Club 2010 is Nate’s predecessor, Matt Travis. We are very excited to have him with us on this trip.

Jennifer Trost and her mother Jean Trost are also accompanying us to New Zealand to keep us on our toes. All kidding aside, Professor Trost is joining us as a guest soprano soloist for a pair of pieces selected for our repertoire.

Dispatch 2: We're Here!

We have FINALLY landed in Auckland, New Zealand. We missed Tuesday altogether since we crossed the International Date Line. We have sung for the passengers and crew on all of the international flights. Our bus driver has been very helpful in getting us acclimated to the city, giving us a tour of Christchurch to fill the time before we were able to check in.

But alas, we have just checked in to our hotel in Christchurch. We have some free time in order to freshen up before a rehearsal and some time to explore the city.
