University Park, Pa. -- Louis Galliker, who graduated from Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences in 1956 with a degree in dairy science, was one of 23 Penn State alumni recognized recently for outstanding professional accomplishments and given the title of Alumni Fellow by the University.

The Alumni Fellow award is the highest award given by the Penn State Alumni Association. Since the award was established in 1973, just 665 of Penn State's 514,000 living alumni have been honored with the title of Alumni Fellow, designated a permanent and lifelong title by the Penn State Board of Trustees.

Galliker is chairman and president of Galliker Dairy Co. in Johnstown, Pa. After beginning his career with the Philadelphia Dairy Products Co., he joined the Galliker Dairy Co. in 1958 and was named president 10 years later. He became chairman of the board in 2002 and chairman and president in 2006.

Galliker Dairy began as an ice cream producer in 1914 and expanded to include milk products in 1925. Today, Galliker Dairy is a leading dairy operation providing a wide range of dairy and nondairy products to the mid-Atlantic region. Because of their relationship with Galliker Dairy, more than 125 dairy farmers within 100 miles of Johnstown are able to continue their family's farming tradition.

A recognized leader in the dairy industry, Galliker serves on numerous local and national boards. He sits on the Board of Directors of the International Ice Cream Association, Pennsylvania Association of Milk Dealers and Pennsylvanians for Effective Government.

Previously, he served as secretary of the Milk Industry Foundation, president and executive committee member of the Pennsylvania Food Industry Council, president of the Northeast Ice Cream Manufacturers Association, president of the marketing committee of Quality Chekd Dairies Inc., and a board member of both the National Association for Milk Marketing Reform and Promistar Financial Corporation.

Galliker's community involvement has included the Greater Johnstown United Way, Jaycees, Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, Talus Rock Girl Scout Council and Bachelors Club.

A member and former treasurer of Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity, Galliker received the Penn State Club of Johnstown Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1980 and Penn State's Distinguished Alumni Award in 1985.

He and his wife, Patricia, both life members of the Penn State Alumni Association, have four daughters and 12 grandchildren. They live in Johnstown.
