Retiring athletic director inducted to Wall of Fame

Jack Monick, athletic director at Penn State Wilkes-Barre and a native of Wilkes-Barre, Pa., was inducted to the Penn State Wilkes-Barre Wall of Fame at an induction ceremony that took place Feb. 12 at the campus.

A graduate of Bradley University with a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education and the University of Scranton with a master’s degree in elementary administration, Monick has served as Penn State Wilkes-Barre’s athletic director for the past 26 years and played a key role in helping plan the campus' Athletic and Recreation Building during its construction.

In addition to his athletic director duties with the campus, Monick was instrumental in the formation of the varsity baseball, tennis, golf and women’s basketball teams at the campus. Monick also has organized, directed and instructed several clinics for baseball, soccer, tennis, basketball and other varsity sports. Additionally, he has instructed numerous physical education courses including golf, bowling, tennis, fitness and games, racquetball, basketball, soccer, skiing/snowboarding and spinning.

Monick also actively participates in community efforts such as the Hanover Area Playground Committee, Hanover Area and Wilkes-Barre Area School District field trips, Keystone State Games, Odyssey Sports and Fitness Club Advisory Board, Mountaintop Jaycees, Big Brothers of America, Back Mountain Youth Soccer and Baseball Committees, and American Red Cross blood drives, among other pursuits.

Monick will retire from his position as athletic director at the campus at the end of February.

In addition to Monick, four others were inducted to Penn State Wilkes-Barre’s Wall of Fame -- Robert Faux, Denise Dymond Mackowiak, Kelly Huff Rattray and Tom Winter.

Supported by the Penn State Wilkes-Barre Alumni Constituent Society, the Penn State Wilkes-Barre Wall of Fame was established to recognize outstanding athletic and academic achievements of its student athletes, as well as achievements of its coaches, administration and teams.
