Rock Ethics Institute names Stand Up Award-winners

April 29, 2011

Penn State's Rock Ethics Institute has named this year's Stand Up Awardees: Jeff Brozena, Ruth Canagarajah and Sara Kizer. The students were honored at a ceremony and reception at The Nittany Lion Inn on April 10, and each received a $1,000 award. Full stories and video interviews with each of these students can be found at online.

The Stand Up Award honors Penn State undergraduate students who have the courage and fortitude to take an ethical stand for a person, cause or belief, and thereby demonstrate ethical leadership concerning this issue. This award and the individuals and stories it honors will remind the entire Penn State community of how often the extraordinary act is possible in ordinary circumstances.

2011 honorees are:

-- Jeff Brozena, class of 2011, information sciences and technology, University Park campus, for his commitment to establishing a community where understanding and hope can gradually replace ignorance and fear.

-- Ruth Canagarajah, class of 2012, international politics and sociology, University Park campus, for reminding us that ethical leadership requires that we be just as willing to listen and to help others hear, as we are to make our own voices heard. Ruth is a Schreyer Honors Scholar and Paterno Liberal Arts Undergraduate Fellow.

-- Sara Kizer, class of 2011, health policy and administration, and economics, University Park campus, for helping her peers to develop ethically motivated responses to the needs of others. Sara is a Schreyer Honors Scholar.
