Activities to commemorate anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001 attacks

August 30, 2011

Penn State Greater Allegheny will commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the United States with opportunities for students to gain a deeper understanding of this day in United States history.

Students will take a bus trip to the Shanksville Memorial in Shanksville, Pa., at 7 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 11. Later that week, from 11 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, Sept. 14, Mohammed A. Bamyeh, professor of sociology at the University of Pittsburgh will be a guest lecturer at the campus. Bamyeh’s topic is “Dynamics of Revolt in the Arab Spring." His lecture will be held in the Ostermayer Room in the Student Community Center.

On Sept. 11, 2001, the hijacking of four commercial airliners and planned attack on symbolic targets resulted in the deaths of over 3,000 innocent people. Shanksville is the site where Flight 93 crash-landed when passengers took command of the plane to avert an attack on Washington, DC. Flight 93 was just 20 minutes from Washington, DC, and had the passengers and crewmembers not taken decisive action, it is likely that the plane would have been used to crash into the U.S. Capitol or the White House causing unimaginable destruction.

“We think it is important to give our students, who were just little children at the time of the attack, an opportunity to visit this place and remember these heroes,” said Glenn Beech, director of Student Affairs.

Mohammed A. Bamyeh is currently a professor of sociology at the University of Pittsburgh and the incoming editor of the International Sociology Review of Books (ISRB). He received his doctorate in sociology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1990. He is the author and editor of several books and articles. His areas of interest have included Islamic studies, political and cultural globalization, civil society and social movements, and comparative social and political theory.
