'Cancer Tales' set for Feb. 3

January 11, 2012

As part of a Humanities First Friday presentation, the Kienle Players will perform a staged reading of excerpts from "Cancer Tales," written by British author Nell Dunn, at noon on Feb. 3, in the Junker Auditorium on the campus of Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and Penn State College of Medicine.

"Cancer Tales" showcases two women -- each on a different and unique journey through cancer.

Following the death of her father, Dunn interviewed patients who were affected by cancer, as well as the doctors, nurses and staff who cared for them. Through these interviews she discovered the importance of patient-centered communication and the therapeutic effect of listening as patients describe their experience of illness and treatment. Her investigative work became the basis for a series of five monologues, which she then converted into the play. The Feb. 3 event will include the staged reading of two of the monologues.

The presentation is free and open to the public. No registration required. For more information contact the Department of Humanities at 717-531-8778.
