Annual Jeremy Herbstritt 5K to be held April 16

April 12, 2012

Registration is open for the sixth annual Jeremy Herbstritt 5K Run/Walk, an event honoring the Penn State engineering alumnus who died at the Virginia Tech shootings in 2007. The 5K Run/Walk will begin at 6:30 p.m. on April 16 at the Intramural Building on Curtin Road on the University Park campus of Penn State.

Registration is open to the public and can be completed online at or at the race. Registration fees $20 for adults and $8 for children ages 10 and under. Participants can register individually or in teams of five.

The top male and female finisher, as well as the winning team, will receive a trophy. Awards will also be given to the top finisher in each age group.

A candlelight vigil will be held at the conclusion of the race.

The proceeds from the 5K will be donated to the Jeremy Herbstritt Memorial Fund to support the construction of a community track facility at the Bellefonte Area High School, Herbstritt's alma mater, in his honor.

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Nittany Valley Running Club created the race in May 2007 to honor the avid runner and marathon participant after his death a month earlier. Since its creation, more than 1,300 runners and walkers have participated in the 5K to raise more than $20,000.

Herbstritt was a Bellefonte native and earned his bachelor of science degree in biochemistry and molecular biology from Penn State in 2003, and his bachelor of science degree in civil engineering in 2006. He was pursuing his master of science degree in civil engineering at Virginia Tech.
