Red Cross holding July blood drives; collections down sharply in June

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The American Red Cross blood supply has reached emergency levels, with 50,000 fewer pints of blood collected than expected in June. The shortage has left the Red Cross with about half as much in its inventory of readily available blood products than it had at this time last year. The Red Cross is calling on all eligible blood donors -- now more than ever -- to donate as soon as possible. All blood types are needed, but especially O negative, B negative and A negative, in order to meet patient demand this summer.

Blood drives will be held throughout July on Penn State's University Park campus. For a complete list of upcoming blood drives, and for more information about donating, visit
