Public is invited to attend free Global Film Series Sept. 26

The public is invited to attend a free showing of the first film in Penn State Beaver’s 2012-13 Global Film Series, 6 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 26, in the auditorium of the Student Union Building.

“In the Time of the Butterflies” was inspired by the true story of the Mirabel sisters who were murdered for their part in an underground plot to overthrow a corrupt dictator and government in the Dominican Republic in 1960.

In 1999, the United Nations General Assembly designated Nov. 25, the anniversary of the day of the murder of the Mirabal sisters, as the annual date for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women in commemoration of the sisters' sacrifice.

Pre and/or post-discussion of the film will be led by JoAnn Chirico, Beaver campus senior instructor in sociology.

For information about this film or the Beaver campus Global Film Series, contact Robin Schreck, student activities and residence life coordinator, at or 724-773-3947.
