Mechanical engineer, grad student honored with best paper award

January 22, 2013

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Hosein Foroutan, a doctorate student in mechanical engineering, and Savas Yavuzkurt, professor of mechanical engineering, have received a best paper award from the International Gas Turbine Institute (IGTI).

The paper, "A Model for Simulation of Turbulent Flow with High Free Stream Turbulence Implemented in OpenFOAM," was named best paper by the IGTI Heat Transfer Committee. The paper was originally presented at the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Turbo Expo in Copenhagen, Denmark, in June.

The engineers' research developed a new turbulence model for simulation of the effects of high free stream turbulence on momentum and heat transport in turbulent flows. The work enables engineers to better predict flow and heat transfer in jet engine blade design and gas turbines.

Foroutan and Yavuzkurt will be recognized at the 2013 ASME Turbo Expo in San Antonio in June.
