ground beetle, Nick Sloff

Farmer's friend ...Ground beetles like this one are important biological control agents in agroecosystems, but when farmers spray insecticides, they often die along with pests. With their large eyes, powerful legs, and large jaws, these carabid beetles are formidable predators in the insect world. They live on the surface of the soil where they capture and consume a wide assortment of soil-dwelling insects, including caterpillars, aphids and slugs that eat corn plants.
