White-footed mouse, Peromyscus leucopus, with deer ticks in its ear. Despite their name, these tiny ticks prey mostly on mice, sometimes on deer, and occasionally on humans. They can pass blood-borne pathogens, such as the bacterium that causes Lyme disease, from one host to another.
