Mycelia of the fungus Sphaerobolus stellatus appear as a lighter layer in the upper part of the soil in this sample from a putting green. By increasing the decay of organic matter in the thatch layer, the fungus causes the turf to sink slightly. This "thatch collapse" can be a big problem on greens by making ball movement unpredictable.
