The June 22 virtual Town Hall events hosted by Penn State President Eric Barron and University leadership to discuss return to work and the resumption of in-person classes this fall are now available to view online at https://liveevents.psu.edu/. Viewers are also encouraged to fill out a survey.

Penn State summer commencement to be held via virtual ceremony
In accordance with public health guidelines to minimize large gatherings and maintain social distancing, Penn State will once again livestream a virtual commencement ceremony at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 15, to honor the 2020 class of summer graduates. When it is safe for large gatherings to occur again, graduates and their families will be invited back for in-person celebrations.

LIGO/Virgo scientists announced the discovery of a mysterious astronomical object that could be either the heaviest neutron star or the lightest black hole ever observed.

Initial COVID-19 infection rate may be 80 times greater than originally reported
A new study from Penn State tracked excess influenza-like illness data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to estimate that the number of early COVID-19 cases in the U.S. may have been more than 80 times greater and doubled nearly twice as fast as originally believed.

New matchbook-sized devices could convert wasted heat in our homes, offices and vehicles into an environmentally friendly source of electricity, according to a team of scientists.

Program designed to help small business navigate through the coming months
To help businesses continue the ongoing work of pivoting as times change, the Penn State Small Business Development Center has developed "R3: Designing a Resiliency Roadmap for the Next 30/60/90 Days," a guided three-month program to help small business owners develop and execute a path to better business operations.

RuYue Mao and Hao Dong, a married couple and the owners of a Harrisburg-area restaurant group, have a long history with Penn State Harrisburg -- one that motivated them to help organize an effort to deliver pre-packaged meals to international students unable to return home during the pandemic.

Joseph Cotruvo Jr., Louis Martarano Career Development Professor of Chemistry, has been awarded a grant from the Department of Energy's Early Career Research Program in support of his work on the rare-earth-metal-binding protein lanmodulin.

Remote treasure hunt leads students to learning opportunities
Penn State DuBois Lecturer in Biology Lola Smith had big plans for her students this past semester, and she didn't let the COVID-19 crisis take the wind out of her sails. Smith had planned a pirate-themed treasure hunt on campus through which her anatomy and physiology students could earn extra credit.

Board of Trustees approves two resolutions at special meeting
During a special meeting today (June 23) held via telephone conference, the Penn State Board of Trustees approved a resolution to amend the University's borrowing authority and a resolution approving Penn State Health's acquisition of Holy Spirit Health System.

Penn State researchers and programmers can learn how to use the repository tool Git to help manage the software development process, at a free online seminar being offered at 10 a.m. on June 30 by Diego Menéndez, software engineer with the Institute for Computational and Data Sciences.
