Saxbys café in the Business Building at University Park isn’t just your average coffee shop. It’s also a partner and experiential learning program with the Smeal College of Business, and is completely student run and managed. As student CEO and supply chain management major, Rainier Foley-Defiore puts it, it’s “a community of students, serving students.”

“An experience like this is unparalleled,” said Foley-Defiore, who is putting his classroom learning to work as student CEO of Saxbys, where he puts his business and supply chain management training into practice by managing stock and inventory, training and leading a team of fellow students, and finding ways “to solve new problems every day.”

Saxbys is a full-service coffee shop — emphasis on “service.” Whether someone wants a specialty coffee, a fresh-baked pastry, or one of the cold brews they keep on tap, Foley-Defiore said ensuring a great experience for every customer is his number one priority.

Saxbys also periodically hosts special campus events, like a fundraiser this past semester to support Lion’s Pantry, the campus food bank for students experiencing food insecurity. Foley-Defiore said he envisions Saxbys not just as a business, but as an active member of the Penn State community.
