IST doctoral student presented with Alumni Association Dissertation Award

College of Information Sciences and Technology doctoral student Jun Xu recently was named a recipient of the 2018 Penn State Alumni Association Dissertation Award and Distinguished Doctoral Scholar Medal. He is one of 14 Penn State graduate students to receive the award, which is considered one of the most prestigious awards that a Penn State graduate student can receive.

Doctoral student in plant pathology receives NSF research grant

Emma Rosenthal, a doctoral student in Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences, will be able to advance her research interests in plant pathology after receiving a grant from the National Science Foundation. The funding will support Rosenthal's research on bacterial leaf spot, a disease that infects lettuce plants.

Graduate student union election dates and locations announced

The dates, times and locations for the Penn State graduate student union election have been released by the Pennsylvania Labor Relations Board. All eligible graduate students are encouraged to educate themselves on this topic and vote in the election, which will take place over six days in April at Penn State University Park, Harrisburg and the College of Medicine in Hershey.

Hearings on graduate unionization effort to begin Sept. 5

Beginning Sept. 5, the Pennsylvania Labor Relations Board will hold hearings related to the petition filed by the Pennsylvania State Education Association to unionize Penn State graduate students. The hearings are scheduled for Sept. 5, 6, 7, 8, 11, 12 and 13 at the Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel.

Energy storage solution combines polymers and nanosheets

A new, lightweight composite material for energy storage in flexible electronics, electric vehicles and aerospace applications has been experimentally shown to store energy at operating temperatures well above current commercial polymers, according to a team of Penn State scientists. This polymer-based, ultrathin material can be produced using techniques already used in industry.

Molecular microscopy illuminates molecular motor motion

A toddler running sometimes loses footing because both feet come off the ground at the same time. Kinesin motors that move materials around in cells have the same problem, which limits how fast they can traverse a microtubule in the cell and carry cargo, according to Penn State researchers who have now seen these kinesin motors move using an unusual microscope and tagging method.
