'Punching up': Students find value in fellowships process

Penn State student Hannah Kohler was in the same position as many other rising seniors: She was thinking about the big questions of the future and wasn’t certain where her path would lead. Students such as Kohler are exactly who Caitlin Ting, interim director for the University Fellowships Office, is looking for.

Miranda Holmes, of State College, is a Fulbright Student studying painting at the University of the Arts in Berlin, Germany. Holmes graduated from Penn State in 2017 with a degree in fine arts from the College of Arts and Architecture and a minor in French and Francophone studies from the College of the Liberal Arts. She is also a Schreyer Scholar.

Department head teaches, researches in Japan as part of Fulbright experience

A. Catharine Ross, professor of nutrition and physiology, and head of the Department of Nutritional Sciences, spent five months in Tokyo, Japan as a Fulbright lecturer and researcher. Ross taught an advanced nutrition course, gave lectures to graduate students on United States food policies and implications, and presented invited lectures at several universities and research institutes. She also conducted research on the traditional Japanese diet.

Couple pulls from experiences to advance ties in Colombia with Fulbright awards

For both Zuleima Karpyn and Luis Ayala, leaving their home country of Venezuela for a Penn State education seemed like a daunting task. After all, they never could have imagined that it would lead to advancing their education, developing their careers as faculty members or meeting each other, resulting in a marriage that’s produced three children.

Fulbright 2019-20 application cycle opens Feb. 1

The 2019-20 Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program competition will soon be open, as the application period will run from Feb. 1 to Aug. 1, 2018. Faculty are encouraged to plan ahead and take advantage of discipline-based Fulbright panels to review project statements.

The Fulbright Scholars Program application cycle opened Feb. 1 and runs through Aug. 1. The program provides funding for scholars, teachers, and professionals to undertake advanced research and teaching activities around the world. Faculty members planning to apply for a sabbatical are encouraged to apply.

EMS professors, couple to research Colombian shale through Fulbright awards

What are the odds that two Penn State professors married to each other are able to both receive Fulbright awards for consecutive semesters in the same country? For Luis Ayala and Zuleima Karpyn, luck seemed to be on their side. Ayala, William A. Fustos Family Professor in Energy and Mineral Engineering, and Karpyn, professor of petroleum and natural gas engineering, both received the Fulbright-Colciencias Innovation and Technology Award from the Fulbright Program to conduct research in Colombia for the fall 2016 and spring 2017 semesters.

Discipline-based faculty review panels created

Several past Fulbright recipients at Penn State have accepted an invitation to join discipline-based panels to mentor colleagues interested in applying for Fulbright grants. These faculty volunteers were charged by Vice Provost Michael Adewumi to assist peers navigating the Fulbright application process. Assistance includes review of project statements and feedback prior to submission. Application deadline is Aug. 1.
