Murray Leeder to present talk on Indigenous peoples and themes in horror media

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. — Murray Leeder, a research affiliate at the University of Manitoba, will present a guest lecture titled "Indigeneity and the Monstrous in Horror Media" via Zoom from 2:30 to 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 27. The lecture is open to all Penn State students, faculty and staff.

With growing calls for equity and justice in representation in contemporary media, Leeder will discuss the presence of Indigenous peoples and themes in horror media and the more recent ascendancy of Indigenous-made horror.

Films to be discussed include “Rhymes for Young Ghouls” (2012), directed by Jeff Barnaby (Mi’kmaq); “Savage” (2009), directed by Lisa Jackson (Anishinaabe); “The Dead Can’t Dance” (2010), directed by Rodrick Pocowatchit (Comanche), “Wakening” (2013), directed by Danis Goulet (Cree/Métis), and “The Candy Meister” (2014), directed by Cowboy Smithx (Blackfoot).
