Interactive booths, free food and prizes highlight Oct. 20 Fresh Check Day fair

HAZLETON, Pa. — Penn State Hazleton students, faculty and staff are invited to stop by the Physical Education Building’s Dr. Thomas M. Caccese Gymnasium from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 20, for Fresh Check Day, a health and wellness fair featuring interactive booths, prizes and giveaways, free food, music and more.

Hosted by Penn State Hazleton’s Health and Counseling Services, the wellness fair is designed to raise awareness of mental health and mental health resources available on campus, in the community, and nationally.

“With the COVID-19 pandemic adding to the typical challenges and anxieties that often come with being a college student, programs like Fresh Check Day are key in our commitment to student success and well-being,” said Campus Counselor Dana Sukeena.

The interactive booths will feature activities that help share important mental health messages and other themes in an engaging and uplifting way, Sukeena said. Topics include suicide prevention, alcohol safety awareness, and maintaining a positive attitude. Several state and community health partners also will be on hand to provide health screenings and demonstrations.

The health and wellness fair also will feature the University’s "smoothie bike" — a bicycle with a blender attached that makes smoothies as it’s pedaled.

Fresh Check Day is held in partnership with the Jordan Porco Foundation, whose mission is to prevent suicide, promote mental health, and create a message of hope for young adults. Fresh Check Day events are held at colleges and universities nationwide.
