UNIVERSITY PARK — In October, Penn State University Libraries will host virtual information sessions on geospatial data, digital maps, and software options. Open to all Penn State faculty, staff and students, these sessions are designed to introduce users to geospatial resources, software and expertise available from the University Libraries.
New this semester is a session focused on the use of digital maps in both historical and contemporary projects. Users will be able to explore a variety of geospatial data resources, approaches, and options for teaching and research projects.
In addition to these sessions, in-person and virtual one-on-one research consultations are offered by the Penn State University Libraries Donald W. Hamer Center for Maps and Geospatial Information.
Fall 2021 sessions
Getting to Know GIS Data/Introduction to ArcGIS Online
Oct. 5, 1–2 p.m. — Zoom Registration
This session will introduce participants to geospatial data from U.S. and international sources, along with information on geospatial software access at Penn State, including ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS ArcMap, and ArcGIS Pro. Users authenticate to the Penn State ArcGIS Online account with their Penn State credentials to access geospatial data from authoritative sources as well as user-generated content, and to create their own content. An overview of web map and Story Map applications will be highlighted, along with information on additional applications available. Presenter: Tara Anthony, GIS specialist.
Paper Maps to Digital Product: Using ArcGIS to Make Maps Accessible
Oct. 12, 11 a.m.–noon — Zoom Registration
This session will introduce participants to georeferencing map scans and making basic web maps. Georeferencing uses software to tie the digital image to a coordinate, which then ties the map to a real-world location. Georeferenced maps can be layered with other maps or data to enhance visualizations. General information on geospatial software access at Penn State, including ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS ArcMap, and ArcGIS Pro, will be discussed. ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online are free to all Penn State faculty, staff and students. Presenter: Heather Ross, map specialist.
