UNIVERSTY PARK, Pa. — Emily Burns, assistant professor in the Stuckeman School’s Department of Graphic Design, has been recognized by the University and College Designers Association (UCDA) 2021 Design Awards with an Award of Excellence for her book cover for “Writing as Resistance,” published by Penn State University Press.

The annual UCDA Design Awards honor the best work in educational design — print, digital, illustration, photography and student competitions — over the past year. They are judged by a panel of peer jurors comprised of designers, design educators, photographers and illustrators working in, or doing a significant portion of their work for, educational institutions.

Burns’s entry, which was honored in the best redesign category, will be part of the UCDA Design Show on display during the organization’s annual design conference Oct. 2-5 in Denver.

Burns also earned an honorable mention in Graphex 52, the 52nd annual Regional Design Award Exhibition sponsored by the Art Directors Club of Tulsa, for her wordmark design for Pine Grove Hall in the identity design category.

Graphex is a creative awards competition that honors the work of students and professionals. Judges for this year’s event included Winston Elliott Sr., designer for Taco Bell Design; Paula Spence, art director and designer in the animation industry, most recently at Cartoon Network Studios and ShadowMachine; and Fidel Peña of Underline Studio.
