"Alumni Updates" highlights career achievements by College of Education alumni.

  • Dominiqua Griffin, assistant professor of school counseling at California State University, Fresno, who earned her doctorate in counselor education and supervision with a dual title in comparative and international education from Penn State in 2018, is one of two AERA early career scholars who have been named as AERA Congressional Fellows for 2021–22. The fellows will spend a year in Washington, D.C., working as staff for a member of Congress or a Congressional committee, and will use their education research expertise, outside of the academic setting, to inform public policy.
  • Several alumni presented at the annual Conference of the Association of Black Sociologists on Aug. 6. Kayla Johnson (doctorate in higher education and comparative and international education) who now is at University of Kentucky chaired the panel, “Domestic and International Sociopolitical and Public Policies Affecting Universities and Education During External Human-Made and Natural Disasters.” Eric Jason Simeon (doctorate in higher education and comparative and international education) who now is at Harbor Institute presented on university STEM in England and the United States. Tara Scales Williams (doctorate in higher education) who now is at College of Southern Maryland discussed homeschooling and college admissions. David Green (doctorate in English-College of the Liberal Arts who took classes in the College of Education) who now is at Howard University presented on university learning amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The panel was organized by Beverly Lindsay, professor emerita of education (higher education and comparative and international education) who now is at University of California, who explicated universities amid crises and pandemics.
  • Maraki Kebede, an independent researcher who received her doctorate in educational leadership and comparative and international education from Penn State; and Kendra Taylor, a project manager for policy research and analysis at City of Atlanta who received a doctorate in educational leadership from Penn State, co-authored an article, “Ethnoracial diversity and segregation in U.S. rural school districts,” published in Rural Sociology. Their co-authors are Erica Frankenberg, professor of education (educational leadership and demography), and Annie Maselli, a doctoral candidate in the Department of Education Policy.
  • Linda K. Malecki, of Binghamton, New York, a 1970 graduate of the College of Education, died on July 9. Malecki met her husband, Robert, in 1961 and they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2020. Linda was a passionate supporter of her alma mater and all things Penn State, with a special emphasis on advancing scholarship opportunities for local students. Her work was recognized in 2016 with the Distinguished Alumna Award from the Greater Binghamton Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association. Read her obituary here.
