UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — A series of short talks organized by the Penn State Data Science Community will showcase a variety of organizations and units at Penn State that offer research and education support and student engagement opportunities. The talks are open to the Penn State community and attendees must register through the Data Science Community website.
Briana Ezray, research data librarian and faculty lead of the Data Science Community, said that the idea for hosting this series occurred while organizing research- and education-focused data science seminars over the past year.
“There are so many units at Penn State that have a strong interest in data sciences and offer support or resources that other members of the data science community can benefit from. However, because of how large Penn State is, it’s not always easy to find the right resource when you need it," said Ezray. "By hosting talks focused on these organizations, we hope to connect researchers and educators with the resources that can help them meet their data science-related goals.”
Summer talks will include:
- 10 a.m., Thursday, June 17: Nittany AI Alliance. Nittany AI Alliance creates programs that bring together students, faculty, staff, and industry leaders to address real-world problems through experiential learning projects using artificial intelligence–based solutions.
- 3 p.m., Wednesday, June 23: Nittany Data Labs. Nittany Data Labs, Penn State’s student-run data science organization, focuses on educating its members and providing opportunities to gain knowledge and projects with real clients and stakeholders where they can contextualize that knowledge.
- 2 p.m., Wednesday, July 7: Institute for Computational and Data Sciences’ (ICDS) Research Innovations with Scientists and Engineers (RISE) Team. ICDS’ RISE team provides advanced computational consulting and support for the Penn State research community, for short- and long-term research projects.
- 9 a.m., Thursday, July 15: ResearchPros. Research Professionals Community, known as ResearchPros, aims to cultivate a community for research professionals and lead the professionalization of the practice and process of research at Penn State.
- 1 p.m., Tuesday, July 27: Learning Analytics with Teaching and Learning with Technology (TLT). TLT’s Data Empowered Learning team explores the usage and impact of learning analytics to support student success.
- 9 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 4: Choosing the Correct Cyberinfrastructure. ICDS will lead a discussion to help researchers understand various computing and storage options hosted both at Penn State and externally, with a focus on helping to identify the right system for a given scientific objective.
- 10 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 10: Corporate Engagement Center. The Corporate Engagement Center connects industry partners to strategic opportunities at Penn State for research and development, philanthropy, and talent recruitment.
