Health system, College of Medicine elevate urology to department

Penn State College of Medicine has created a new Department of Urology and named Dr. Jay Raman, the current chief of the Division of Urology and professor of surgery, its interim chair.

To advance the success of achieving key goals and missions central to the College of Medicine and Penn State Health, the new Department of Urology will create greater visibility for urology. This will be instrumental in delivering outstanding high-quality clinical care to the people of Central Pennsylvania, the state of Pennsylvania, and the bordering Mid-Atlantic states; providing premier educational programs that will train and develop the next generation of exceptional urologists; and generating innovative and progressive research that will contribute to the advancement of the field of urologic sciences, and further enhance our regional and national reputation.

Raman assumes the new interim chair position on July 1. In his 13 years with the organization, six as division chief, Raman has distinguished himself as a respected clinician, researcher, educator and leader in the field of kidney and prostate oncology. During his tenure as chief of the Division of Urology, the practice has grown from five faculty to 15, has increased its resident complement and was recognized as a top 50 best hospital for urology in the U.S. News & World Report rankings. Urology also branched out across numerous outpatient sites in the Penn State Health system.

“This important change to our urology program will allow us to better achieve our mission of bringing to our system more talented surgeons to meet the needs of our patients,” Raman said. “Additionally, it will elevate our institution’s reputation in academic medicine, which is critical for recruiting the best investigators and collaborators to work together for discoveries that can improve health outcomes, and further ensure that we can deliver the most advanced treatments in the communities we serve.”
