Fellows are selected as outstanding leaders of the profession who have made significant, nationally recognized contributions to industrial and systems engineering, according to the IISE website. Each year, 20 or fewer eligible IISE members are recognized as fellows, the highest classification of IISE membership.

Yang researches sensor-based modeling and analysis of complex systems for a variety of applications, such as quality improvement, performance optimization and process monitoring. He has contributed to 69 journal articles and 52 peer-reviewed conference papers as well as co-authored four books. Work from his research program, supported by state, federal and private funding, has been recognized with several “Best Paper” and “Best Poster” awards from IISE, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences conferences. Yang was also awarded additional National Science Foundation (NSF) funding to support industry experience for four students with IBM. Many of his former doctoral advisees are currently tenured or tenure-track faculty members at universities across the United States, such as Texas Tech University, University of Texas Arlington, Oklahoma State University, University of Miami, University of Oklahoma and University of Connecticut.

Yang has served a number of roles in IISE, including associate editor for both IISE Transactions and IISE Transactions on Healthcare Systems Engineering. He also chaired the 2016 annual conference program, for which he was responsible for managing more than 1,400 submitted manuscripts. Within the IISE Data Analytics and Information Systems division, Yang has served as president, president-elect and as a council member. He has also chaired several program tracks for the IISE Annual Conference since 2014.

“I am very much honored to receive this recognition from IISE. This is a milestone in my professional career as an industrial engineer,” Yang said. “I am very fortunate and thankful to have an opportunity to work with talented students, colleagues and collaborators. I will exercise continuous improvements to train the next generation of engineers to bring analytical skills and nonlinear thinking into the optimization process of complex systems.”

Yang currently serves as the principal investigator and site director of the NSF Center for Health Organization Transformation and is also affiliated with the Penn State Cancer Institute, Clinical and Translational Science Institute, Institute for Computational and Data Sciences and the Center for Innovative Materials Processing through Direct Digital Deposition (CIMP-3D). He has been recognized with numerous honors, including a Harold and Inge Marcus Career Professorship in Engineering, a Distinguished Honors Faculty fellowship in the Schreyer Honors College at Penn State and an NSF CAREER award.
