Alumni groups offer virtual summer program series

HAZLETON, Pa — The Greater Hazleton Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association is teaming up with University alumni organizations from across the region for a series of free virtual programs beginning Monday, June 7.

Coordinated by the Berks, Hazleton, Schuylkill, Scranton and Wilkes-Barre Penn State alumni organizations, the Summer 2021 Virtual Program series features interactive games like bingo and trivia, workshops on candle-making, a history of guide dogs, and an insider look at the Northeastern Pennsylvania-set sitcom “The Office.”

This series is open to the public and registration is required.

The following programs will be held this summer:

Summer BINGO Madness: Featuring the Penn State “Button Man”

7 p.m. Monday, June 7

Join us for virtual bingo: Five games will be played with each winner earning a $25 Barnes & Noble gift card. The winner of a final “coverall”-themed game will receive a $100 Barnes & Noble gift card. 

Games will be hosted by Jonathan U. Dougherty, director of corporate knowledge, James G. Davis Construction Corporation. Dougherty is a 1999 graduate of Penn State.

Insider Look at “The Office” — Pennsylvania Paper & Supply Company

6 p.m. Monday, June 21

Lynn Jesuitt-Donnini, a 1990 graduate of Penn State and vice president of People-Culture and Public Relations at Pennsylvania Paper & Supply, will share stories about the connection between her current employer and its ties to the fictional “Dunder Mifflin” paper company featured on “The Office” sitcom. Also included are a tour and a peek at collectibles from the show.

Creative Candles by Corina

7 p.m. Monday, July 12

Learn how to make your own soy candle from Corina Piller, owner of She Paints and 2016 Penn State graduate. With candle names like “Fruit Loop Cereal,” “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” “Blueberry Cobbler,” and “Fall Leaves,” Corina has a candle for every season and taste.

Through a Dog’s Eyes

7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 9

Join us as we explore the training of service dogs to guide visually impaired persons. Learn about the origin of guide dogs and their training from birth to service. Discover how local volunteer families are participating in this important service.

This event is hosted by retired Penn State Hazleton Assistant Professor of Biology David Orbin and his wife, Kathy.

Kahoot – Penn State Trivia

7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 23

Test your trivia knowledge with Roseanne Chesakis, 1982 Penn State graduate and information and services supervisor at Penn State Schuylkill’s Ciletti Memorial Library. Five games will be played with each winner receiving a $20 Barnes & Noble gift card. One grand prize winner will earn a Penn State goodie basket.
