UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State President Eric Barron and University guests will discuss the expansion plans and upcoming spring and summer events schedule for The Arboretum at Penn State during the season finale of WPSU’s “Digging Deeper” on Sunday, May 23.

Barron will welcome Kim Steiner, founding director of the Arboretum and professor of forest biology in the Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences, and Shari Kay Edelson, the Arboretum’s director of operations, to the show.

WPSU’s “Digging Deeper: The Arboretum at Penn State" will air at 10:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. on WPSU-TV and can be streamed on live.wpsu.org. WPSU is a Penn State Outreach service.

In February, Steiner announced his upcoming retirement and, on May 10, Penn State announced a national search for his replacement and the move of operational oversight of the Arboretum from the Office of the Provost to Penn State Outreach.

Barron said the Arboretum is an important mainstay of the Penn State and surrounding communities.

“This is a natural living laboratory,” he said. “Research, the educational and academic part of it, and the beauty of it. As we are learning as it's grown, it's become a bigger and bigger destination. It's a part of making State College a wonderful place to live.”

WPSU’s “Digging Deeper” explores how work being done at the University impacts the broader community. Penn State senior Rhea Jha serves as co-host and rounds out each episode by asking Barron questions that are on the minds of students, faculty, staff and community members.
