Recent industrial engineering alumnus earns Alpha Pi Mu scholarship

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Terrence Saylor, a 2021 industrial engineering graduate and State College native, received a $1,000 scholarship from Alpha Pi Mu, the national industrial engineering honors society.

The Alpha Pi Mu scholarship honors undergraduates who excel in the study of industrial engineering and demonstrate achievements in academics, extracurricular activities and leadership. Alpha Pi Mu fosters professional development and networking among industrial engineering faculty and graduate and undergraduate student members and works to advance the quality of industrial engineering education nationwide.

Saylor was one of nine students in the United States to receive the award.

"As I concluded my time at Penn State, I was humbled to be recognized for my academic and professional achievements by Alpha Pi Mu,” Saylor said. “By joining the industrial engineering honor society, I was able to expand my network and knowledge far beyond what I could have accomplished otherwise.”

During his time as an undergraduate, Saylor took advantage of internships, student groups and volunteer opportunities.

Last summer, Saylor interned with Enviva, a sustainable wood pellet manufacturer based in Cottondale, Florida. There, he worked on process improvement, managed capital infrastructure projects and designed and executed steam addition trials to increase plant production.

In 2019, he worked with Steelcase Inc., a furniture manufacturer in Grand Rapids, Michigan, as a quality engineering intern, and earlier worked at Penn State’s Applied Research Lab (ARL) as an engineering intern, where he prototyped Navy and Department of Defense research projects.

As a student, Saylor served as treasurer of Penn State's chapter of the College Diabetes Network, served on the leadership counsel of ARL and participated as a Leonard Scholar for the Leonhard Center for Enhancement of Engineering Education, where he worked alongside other students to help improve the College of Engineering and its available curriculum.

From the Penn State Harold and Inge Marcus Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering (IME), Saylor received the Outstanding Senior Award, the Jackie Livella Award for Service to the IME department, the Triangle Fraternity Academic Excellence Award and the Wilbur L. and Judy L. Meier Scholarship. He also was named IME’s 2021 student marshal

“I want to thank everyone at Alpha Pi Mu who recognized my efforts,” Saylor said. “I am excited to continue to give back to the world of industrial engineering in the work force."

Saylor recently moved to Cleveland, Ohio, to join Lincoln Electric as a technical sales trainee.

“Terrence excelled academically and went above and beyond to demonstrate outstanding leadership, service and volunteerism in the IME department, in University organizations and in the State College community,” said Catherine Harmonosky, associate professor and associate department head of IME, whom Saylor chose to be his faculty marshal. “He consistently maintained a positive and professional attitude with a ‘can-do’ spirit in all his endeavors. I have no doubt he will accomplish great things.”
