Training seminars offered for patient population discovery tool TriNetX

Penn State Clinical and Translational Science Institute offers training on its TriNetX tool

Penn State Clinical and Translational Science Institute is offering four training sessions for its patient population discovery tool for health research, TriNetX. Training sessions will be held virtually on May 26. Registration is required for each session.

Through TriNetX, the Penn State community can search for patients meeting specified criteria in a de-identified database without prior Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval. Several data sets are available, including from Penn State Health and peer organizations. New users can request access to TriNetX on the institute’s website. For a consultation about using TriNetX, complete a service request form.

The four May 26 sessions are:

Introduction to TriNetX

Introduction to TriNetX will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. This session is for users who have never used TriNetX before, have run only a few queries, or want a refresher of the basics. Registration is available here. Topics to be covered include:

  •  Overview of TriNetX and its capabilities
  •  Overview of available networks/populations to query
  •  Introduction to Query Builder: how to restrict cohort by age/sex, add terms and add a time constraint to a term
  •  Learn Explore Cohort, Analyze Criteria, Rate of Arrival and Summary Statistics features
  •  Overview of Help Center and Design Assistance

Query Builder - Advanced Techniques

Query Builder - Advanced Techniques will be held from 11 a.m. to noon. This session is for users who have experience with TriNetX and want to add more complex logic to their queries. Registration is available here. Topics to be covered include:

  • Review of available networks to query
  • Filter terms: Query for age at event, text lab results, medication details and oncology details
  • Groups: Relate two terms or groups together, add number of instances and change logic between groups to AND or OR
  •  Use groups and add names to organize your query
  • Add genomics terms to your query

Advanced Analytics - Compare Cohorts, Analyze Outcomes and Compare Outcomes

Advanced Analytics - Compare Cohorts, Analyze Outcomes and Compare Outcomes will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. This session is for users who are comfortable with Query Builder and are ready to analyze data within the platform. Registration is available here. Topics to be covered include:

  • Compare Cohorts: Similar to Explore Cohort but with two cohorts at once. Get a quick snapshot of where cohorts differ.
  • Analyze Outcomes: Calculate risk of specific outcomes after an index event for one cohort.
  • Compare Outcomes: Calculate risk of specific outcomes after an index event for two cohorts. Includes option to balance your cohorts through propensity score matching.

Advanced Analytics - Treatment Pathways and Incidence and Prevalence

Advanced Analytics - Treatment Pathways and Incidence and Prevalence will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. This session is for users who are comfortable with Query Builder and are ready to analyze data within the platform. Registration is available here. Topics to be covered include:

  • Treatment Pathways: Discover which treatments (medications and procedures) and order of treatments are most common in a cohort. Drill deeper into the time to treatment.
  • Incidence and Prevalence: The newest analytic just released in February 2021 allows to calculate incidence proportion, incidence rate and prevalence of an event within a cohort. Stratify across age, sex, race, and ethnicity.
