Brittany Nicole Harris, who will receive a bachelor of science degree in psychology as part of Penn State Harrisburg’s Class of 2021, said personal perseverance and a strong support system have helped her reach her academic goals. She reflected on her journey:

As I look back on the past four years of my undergraduate career, I am overwhelmed by the memories and experiences I have had. Four years ago, I decided to stay in my hometown, instead of moving away to attend college, and I am so happy I did. During this time, I found a passion for working with children being a preschool teacher while I continued my educational journey.

My personal perseverance through life’s difficult events is why I am standing where I am today. I started my undergrad as a first-generation college student with no guidance or help from my family on how to start a career or how to succeed in college. Luckily, I have met many amazing faculty members at Penn State Harrisburg who have been a helping hand throughout this process for me.

Another huge difficulty I faced during my undergrad was losing my grandmother. My personal perseverance and support system through these difficulties have pushed me to always put my academics first and have helped me reach my goals. These difficulties have driven me to be more motivated and determined to complete my education.

Penn State Harrisburg has impacted my life in a significant positive way. It has provided me with opportunities I would have never known were available. Penn State Harrisburg has also provided me with relationships with students and faculty that have impacted me in a positive way. During the pandemic, the professors at Penn State Harrisburg have been completely understanding and supportive during these challenging times.

The support system at Penn State Harrisburg really pushed me in the last year to keep going to finish my degree. After graduation, I will be attending Messiah University for my master’s degree in counseling psychology. I plan on being a part of the Penn State Alumni Association, and I am so proud to be a Penn State graduate.
