Students should start preparing Box accounts for migration

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State’s transition from Box to Office 365 cloud storage options will continue this summer as active student Box accounts are migrated to OneDrive in June.

Before migrations begin, students should begin cleaning up their Box accounts by deleting unneeded files and consider following the other steps outlined in the Box pre-migration checklist in order to ensure a smooth and quick migration.

Students who are planning to graduate this summer should download any data from Box they would like to retain. Box data will not be recoverable after September.

It is important to note that Box data will be inaccessible while it is being migrated and the bigger an account is, the longer it will take to migrate. Eliminating unnecessary files will help to speed up the process.

Students will receive an email once their migration is complete. At that point, Box files will be read-only and users should begin working in OneDrive.

Penn State began migrating faculty and staff Box data in October 2020. Several factors contributed to the decision to retire the long-used cloud storage service, including Box dramatically raising its prices and ending its unlimited storage offering, and calls from the University community to minimize duplicative offerings.
