WYOMISSING, Pa. – Penn State Berks will celebrate National Biomechanics Day on Wednesday, April 7. Unlike past years when nearly 300 high school students came to campus, this year the event will be virtual in the form of a LionSide Chat webinar from 10 to 11 a.m. titled "National Biomechanics Day: A Virtual Experience with Penn State Berks." The goal is to introduce prospective students and their families to fields that comprise biomechanics, including engineering, kinesiology and health science.

Ever wonder what makes your body move? Attendees will discover how muscles apply forces to bones to create movement without even thinking about it. Three expert biomechanists will demonstrate how engineering and mathematics can be used to unravel the mysteries of the human body. Biomechanics can be used to better understand complex concepts, improve sport performance, prevent injuries, and heal the body.

This LionSide Chat will be presented by Allison Altman Singles, assistant professor of kinesiology and mechanical engineering; Joseph Mahoney, associate professor of mechanical engineering and kinesiology; and Benjamin Infantolino, associate professor of kinesiology.

This event is part of the National Biomechanics Day, a worldwide celebration of biomechanics in its many forms, for high school students and teachers, sponsored by the American Society of Biomechanics.

This webinar is sponsored by the Penn State Berks Human Movement Research Center, a multi-disciplinary collaborative research group consisting of Penn State Berks faculty with research, education and outreach interests related to enhancing human movement and improving life. Bringing together expertise from kinesiology, engineering, mathematics, psychology and other disciplines allows the research team to address important questions about human movement from a broad perspective.

Attendees are encouraged to use the hashtag #nbd2021 on social media. For additional information about National Biomechanics Day, contact Allison Altman Singles at ARA5093@psu.edu.
