EarthTalks: Chief sustainability officer to discuss initiatives at Penn State

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Sustainability initiatives aim to help solve the major crises of our time, from climate change to economic and social inequality. Paul Shrivastava, chief sustainability officer, director of the Sustainability Institute and professor of management at Penn State, will discuss how Penn State is attempting to institutionalize sustainability at the University, in Pennsylvania and around the world, at a talk at 4 p.m. Monday, March 29.

The seminar, which is free and open to the public, will be broadcast via Zoom.

Shrivastava is an academic entrepreneur whose research focuses on using science and the arts to develop transdisciplinary solutions to sustainability challenges. He co-founded Hindustan Computer Ltd., one of India’s largest computer companies, and founded the non-profit Industrial Crisis Institute and the journal Organization and Environment. He was also founding president and CEO of knowledge management software company eSocrates and founding chair of the Organizations and the Natural Environment Division of the Academy of Management.

He has published 17 books and more than 100 articles in peer-reviewed journals and has been recognized with several awards, including a Fulbright Senior Scholar Award and the IIM Calcutta Distinguished Alumni Award. Shrivastava also is a member of the Club of Rome, an organization of notable scientists, economists, businesspersons, high-level civil servants and former heads of state who share a common concern for the future of humanity and strive to make a difference.

Shrivastava’s talk is part of the spring 2021 EarthTalks series, “Energy and climate policy: How to avoid a global hothouse.” The series focuses on policies and technology that could help slow down global warming and addresses topics such as carbon taxes, renewable energy subsidies and the feasibility of carbon sequestration.
