Chemical engineering professor named fellow of national society

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Bryan Vogt, professor of chemical engineering at Penn State, was named a 2021 fellow of the American Chemical Society (ACS) Division of Polymeric Materials: Science and Engineering (PMSE). He will be recognized at the 2021 ACS spring meeting, held virtually April 5-30.

“This is a great honor,” Vogt said. “The number of PMSE fellows is limited. I am humbled to be included among the giants in the field of polymers.”

The fellowship was established to honor a small percentage of PMSE members who have made significant contributions to the science and engineering of polymeric materials, according to the PMSE website. Recognition is given for specific scientific or technological contributions to polymer materials science and engineering or applied polymer science or for overall advancement of those fields. Candidates must be PMSE members in good standing for at least five years and be nominated by other PMSE members.

Vogt’s research has recently focused on how restricting a polymer structure to the size of an individual polymer molecule affects its responses to forces such as pushing or twisting. He and his group found that the differences in responses of small structures compared to those of bulk polymers are primarily caused by interactions with the surrounding environment. With these findings, Vogt investigated ways to prevent the degradation of polymer properties, including modifying the polymer’s molecular design and using additives. His other research interests include additive manufacturing, or 3D printing, and the sustainability of plastics.

As a member of PMSE for nearly 20 years, Vogt has served as a member-at-large on the executive committee and has participated in organizing research symposia. He currently serves as an associate editor for ACS Applied Polymer Materials. Vogt is also a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and the American Physical Society.

Vogt joined Penn State as a professor in 2019. He received his bachelor of science in chemical engineering at Michigan Technological University and his doctorate in chemical engineering at the University of Massachusetts.
