HERSHEY, Pa. — Penn State Health and Orthopedic Institute of Pennsylvania (OIP) have entered into a collaborative agreement for OIP to provide orthopedic care at Penn State Health’s two Cumberland County hospitals — Holy Spirit Medical Center and Hampden Medical Center. This arrangement builds on the reputation of OIP’s surgeons and specialists who have been providing patients in central Pennsylvania with compassionate, comprehensive orthopedic care for 50 years. OIP is a private, independent practice.

Penn State Health and OIP began discussing a collaboration in early 2020 for OIP to provide orthopedic care at Hampden Medical Center, set to open this fall. Those discussions expanded to include Holy Spirit Medical Center when it became part of Penn State Health on Nov. 1, 2020. As a result, OIP will oversee general orthopedic care as well as orthopedic trauma at Holy Spirit Medical Center. Dr. Brett Himmelwright has been named medical director of general orthopedic care at Holy Spirit Medical Center, a level II trauma center.

“This collaboration is a natural fit — IP and Penn State Health have a shared mission of being a trusted choice for communities in the area,” said Dr. Himmelwright. “We look forward to providing the thoughtful, personalized care that OIP patients have come to know at Penn State Health facilities.”

OIP also will oversee orthopedic care at Hampden Medical Center when it opens this fall. Penn State Health has appointed two leadership positions: Dr. Michael Fernandez will be medical director of spine surgery and Dr. Matthew Kelly will be medical director of general orthopedics. OIP providers have been instrumental in the policy development and choosing equipment for the new facility.

“Penn State Health is thrilled to work with an organization that has spent five decades building its reputation for exceptional orthopedic care,” said Dr. Safa Farzin, senior vice president for Penn State Health Medical Group. “OIP and Penn State Health share the same dedication to high-quality patient care. This collaboration is a win for Penn State Health, and for patients.”
