UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Penn State EcoReps are planning a lantern display on the Old Main Lawn in commemoration of Earth Hour 8:30-9:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 27. Students, faculty, staff and members of the Penn State community are encouraged not to use any electricity during this hour to reduce carbon emissions and to help fight climate change.
Earth Hour started in 2007 as a symbolic, “lights out” event held by the World Wildlife Fund in Sydney, Australia, that has expanded in the last 14 years into a global phenomenon of grassroots-powered activism. Held every year on the last Saturday of March, Earth Hour engages millions of people in more than 180 countries and territories to switch off their lights in support for our planet. Earth Hour is now one of the world’s largest grassroots movements for the environment.
On the EcoReps website, there will be a place for participants to take a pledge to turn out their lights. One lantern will be set up for each pledge taken. The lights on the clock tower of Old Main will also be turned off during this hour.
