Work by Penn State students was recognized among the best in the nation, earning one first-place finish and two Awards of Excellence in the annual Broadcast Education Association (BEA) Festival of Media Arts competition.
More than 1,300 entries from 250 colleges and universities were considered in the competition, which includes categories for audio, documentary, film and video, interactive multimedia, news, scriptwriting, sports and two-year colleges.
“We’re happy and proud the work has been honored. These kinds of awards validate the high-quality, professional-level work our students consistently produce,” said Steve Kraycik, associate teaching professor and director of student television for the Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications. “It’s a testament to the level of quality they produce — and to the standard we want them to achieve and maintain.”
Penn State’s award winners were:
- First Place, TV Sports Story/Short Feature: "Stephen Beattie: Penn State Basketball's 'Glue Guy'" by Jack Hirsh
- Award of Excellence, TV Long Feature Reporting: "Israel Overcoming Numerous Obstacles in Fight Against COVID-19" by Jack Hirsh
- Award of Excellence, TV Sports News Program: “In the Game: Spring 2020 Episode 1” by Erin Neri and Paddy Cotter
The BEA is the premier international academic media organization, driving insights, excellence in media production and career advancement for educators, students and professionals. The Festival of Media Arts, a national showcase for student work, seeks to enhance and extend creative activities, teaching and professional standards in broadcasting and other forms of electronically mediated communication.
