Suicide preventions speaker Kevin Hines shares personal story March 3

WYOMISSING, Pa. — In 2000, Kevin Hines attempted to take his life by jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge. Many factors contributed to his miraculous survival, including a sea lion which kept him afloat until the Coast Guard arrived. Now Hines travels the world sharing his story of hope, healing, and recovery while teaching people of all ages the art of wellness and the ability to survive pain with true resilience. He will visit Penn State Berks via Zoom at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 3, to share his story.

At age 17, Hines was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Through his powerful story, his strong will to live and stay mentally well have inspired people worldwide. Hines is a best-selling author of "Cracked Not Broken, Surviving and Thriving After A Suicide Attempt." He is also a documentary filmmaker and suicide prevention and mental health advocate who has reached millions with his inspiring personal story of survival.

Candid and upbeat, he touches the hearts and minds of audiences everywhere as he delivers practical yet powerful skills for building a lifelong mental wellness toolkit for oneself, and for loved ones. He spreads encouraging messages about living mentally healthy and the importance of seeking help and support during times of crisis, while underscoring the power of the human spirit.

In 2016, Mental Health America awarded Hines their highest honor, the Clifford W. Beers Award, for his efforts to improve the lives of and attitudes toward people with mental illnesses.

His fight has been long and arduous, but he said he is determined to remain committed to life until its natural end. His motto is "Be Here Tomorrow" and every day after that.
