Penn State Hazleton offering virtual SAT prep course

HAZLETON, Pa. — Penn State Hazleton in January 2021 will once again offer its virtual course designed to prepare high school students who will be taking the SAT this spring.

The SAT prep course runs from Jan. 18 to March 4 and will be held on Mondays and Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. Topics include format of the SAT, how to prepare for it, and tips for taking the test. Cost, including books and materials, is $299 if registered before Dec. 31.

The course is designed to help students prepare for the four parts of the SAT: reading, writing and language, math and the optional essay portion. Students will also have a chance to learn and practice the variety of reading and writing passages in the SAT and to practice the math skills that will be tested.

Familiarity with the current format of the SAT, recommended order for taking the test, ways to increase reading comprehension and understanding of paired passages, essay strategies and tips, and problem-solving methods to develop math skills are emphasized in the course.

Additionally, students will learn the advantages and disadvantages of guessing, how to reduce the time needed to answer questions, how the tests are scored, and how to compute a score on sample tests.

Course materials are practical and relevant for the current SAT exams. Students are given homework assignments between classes and sample SAT exams are given as practice tests.
