Johnson conducts interdisciplinary research on issues related to educational access, equity and student success, with attention to its intersections with race, gender and other axes of social inequality. He has published over 30 scholarly  publications that appear in a wide-range of outlets including influential peer-reviewed journals such as Urban Education, Journal of Diversity in Higher Education, Journal of College Student Development, and Children and Youth Services Review. His work has been supported by grants and contracts from the Spencer Foundation and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Sciences, to name a few. Drawing on his scholarly expertise and professional experiences, Johnson frequently speaks and consults with campuses and other organizations on issues related to equity-minded leadership and anti-racist student success practices. For his early career accomplishments, ACPA-College Educators International honored him with the Emerging Scholar Award in 2020. His alma mater, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, also honored him with the 2020 Young Alumni Achievement Award.
