UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State University Libraries is seeking individuals to serve as storytellers for its fifth annual VOICES: Share Your Story Showcase on Tuesday-Thursday, Mar. 23-25, 2021. VOICES 2021 is Penn State’s adaptation of the “Human Library,” an innovative model focused on creating dialogue to challenge prejudices and stereotypes. Each “voice” is an individual from marginalized or stigmatized identities sharing aspects of their life journey with the Penn State Community.
Volunteer “voices” hail from all walks of life, ages, genders and lifestyle choices; and must be willing to share their experiences in group conversations. They will answer participants’ honest, curious questions in an effort to challenge stereotypes and prejudice through dialogue — and difficult questions are expected and appreciated. Because this is a virtual event, organizers are seeking voices from across the global Penn State community impacted by any level of dismissal, prejudice or disenfranchisement based on one or more visible or invisible identities.
The hope is that such interaction will promote inclusion, encourage civil discourse to reduce bias and challenge narrow perspectives.
