UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) recently announced its scholarship recipients for the 2020-21 academic year. Five students from various disciplines in the Penn State College of Engineering were awarded scholarships.
Each year, ASHRAE awards scholarships of up to $10,000 each to select qualified students. This year, ASHRAE awarded a total of $167,000 in scholarships to engineering students from colleges and universities across the country.
ASHRAE created its scholarship program to motivate current and prospective engineering students to pursue careers in the STEM industry. Over the last 30 years, ASHRAE has awarded more than $2.25 million to more than 400 students.
This year’s recipients from Penn State included three architectural engineering students, one electrical engineering student and one mechanical engineering student.
Molly Sizemore, fifth-year student in the integrated architectural engineering bachelor’s and master’s program, received the Willis H. Carrier Scholarship. This scholarship was established by the Carrier Corporation in memory of its founder, who is known for inventing the world’s first scientifically designed air-conditioning system.
Alexis Sheeto, fourth-year student in the integrated architectural engineering bachelor’s and master’s program, received the Reuben Trane Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded over the course of two years and was established by the Trane Company, in memory of its founder, who was an engineer, inventor and business executive who held 28 patents.
Alexandra Brown, fifth-year architectural engineering student, received the ASHRAE Region III Setty Family Foundation Scholarship, a scholarship established by ASHRAE that supports undergraduate students who are majoring in pre-engineering or engineering.
Jon Cowart, senior electrical engineering student, was the recipient of the Frank M. Coda Scholarship. This scholarship was created in memory of ASHRAE’s former executive vice president, who served from 1981-2004.
Isabella Gayoso, sophomore student double majoring in mechanical engineering and aerospace engineering, was awarded the David C. J. Peters Scholarship, which was established by Southland Industries in honor of former senior vice president of engineering David Peters, an advocate of mentorship and recruitment of engineering students.
Applications are now being accepted for the 2021-22 undergraduate engineering, technology, regional/chapter and university-specific scholarships. The application deadline is Dec. 1. More information on how to apply can be found here.
