Suicide prevention training course to be held virtually Sept. 21

UNVERSITY PARK, Pa. — A free QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) suicide prevention training course sponsored by the Penn State Gender Equity Center will be held at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 21, via Zoom. The training, which is open to all, will be facilitated by the Jana Marie Foundation and is limited to 30 participants.

To register, visit https://janamariefoundation.org/virtual-qpr-course/. Those who register will receive the Zoom information by Friday, Sept. 18.

QPR stands for Question, Persuade and Refer — the three simple steps anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide. Just as people trained in CPR and the Heimlich maneuver help save thousands of lives each year, people trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade and refer someone to help.

The key components covered in the training are:

  • How to question, persuade and refer someone who may be suicidal.
  • How to get help for yourself or learn more about preventing suicide.
  • The common causes of suicidal behavior.
  • The warning signs of suicide.
  • How to get help for someone in crisis.
