Resources available for students impacted by natural disasters

Penn State extends message of sympathy, support for disaster victims

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State officials have reached out to students from areas affected by Hurricane Laura and wildfires in California, expressing concern and offering to connect them to the University’s student support services. 

Approximately 1,000 Penn State students who currently live in or are from areas in the paths of Hurricane Laura and wildfires in California have been contacted by Penn State Student Affairs.

Resources available to students include:

  • Student Care and Advocacy, which provides students with the necessary support to make difficult situations more manageable in times of emotional and mental distress, academic distress, loss of housing or financial insecurity, can assist with connecting students with appropriate resources. University Park students can call 814-863-2020 or email StudentCare@psu.edu for assistance.
  • Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), which can help provide students with emotional support, including wellness and self-help options, crisis intervention and psychiatric services.
  • The Penn State Crisis Line, which is available 24/7 and can be called at 877-229-6400 or text “LIONS” to 741741.
  • World Campus students who have been impacted by a natural disaster can request assistance by completing the World Campus Care and Concern form, or sending an email to wcstudentconcern@psu.edu.
  • Students who have been contacted also can respond directly to email communications if they are in need of assistance.
